The first Captain teddy movie came out in 1982 and featured Brown Bearwick as the famous super hero battling his arch nemesis DR. Freeze in the aptly titled "Captain Teddy and the Evil Dr. Freeze". The movie was a smash hit at the box office and lead to the creation of three action packed Captain Teddy series.
The Captain teddy animated series ran for six years. Each episode was broken up into half an hour segments that ran each Saturday morning. The show would begun with a one minute reminder of what was happening and then launch into the now famous theme song. Many of the comic book stories were played out in the animated version, as well as some new material never seen anywhere else. (For example the story of Billy Bear meeting Dr. Slime came from the episode "The Deathly Scourge" but has never been mentioned in print.) There was also the inclusion of three characters in the cartoon that never existed in the comic books or movies including The Penguin Pilot, Master Branagan and Pepe Le Pup a french artist who lives below Benjamin Bear. Because of this some fans like to argue whether key plot points of the cartoon series actually exist in true "canon" events or whether they should be disregarded. Either way, the show was incredibly entertaining, and was released on VHS, each tape containing the full two hour animated episode. They are currently not available on DVD, but there are rumors that they may eventually be remastered and released. Until then E-bay occasionally has an episode for sale, or there are those who have taped episodes and may be willing to share or swap.
Both movie series are released by Teddy Movie Studios, but there is a difference between the two. The "big Budget" or "bog movies" as they are termed by the fans are released roughly one a year and star Ted Enig. The movies always represent a major storyline that is not told in the comic books. They represent an action packed hour and a half filled with expensive effects and high dollar stunts that while not from the printed series themselves are often referenced in other material and as such are considered a part of the captain teddy canon universe. These movies are preceded by a large advertising campaign that includes story specific merchandise as well as a usual tv spot during the Christmas season with a sneak preview.
Right now all of the "big" movies are available on DVD individually, or in several different collections all released by teddy Movies Home Video, including the "red white and blue collection" that features red, white and blue metal tins, each one holding five movies that span from 1982 to 2003. A special bonus, included with this particular collection, is a three part comic series (one comic per collection) that tells the story of the Tribebel invasion. These comic books are not available anywhere else - except maybe e-bay, and are considered highly collectable.
The second series of movies is sometimes called the "small movies" or "cheapies". These movies are produced at a rate of roughly ten or more a
year and have a pretty low budget. Most of the storylines in these hour and a half adventures come from the comic books, but sometimes plot points are changed or missing all together. There are also a few original adventures, such as Captain teddy and The Bad Birthday or Captain teddy and the Frogbears.
All of these movies have played in select theaters before going to VHS or DVD except for the Made for TV Captain teddy and Killer Christmas, which was shown as a Christmas special in 1992 and stared the famous actress Gezzy as Prunehilda (despite the fact Prunhilda is supposed to be a polar bear!).
These movies have produced a lot of memorabilia, including cd soundtracks, toys, action figures, collectables and more, and despite their lower budget many titles are more well know then their big budget cousins.
The small movies usually star the original Brown Bearwick, but a few other actors have stepped into the boots of Captain Teddy over the years. Most notable of these was Kaj Nelson who stared in all eleven of the Captain Teddy Time traveler movies wherein Captain Teddy chases evil across the centuries while meeting many interesting historical figures including Robin Hodd, George Washington and Teddies from the future. There were rumors at the time that he was going to remain in the role of captain teddy permanently, but when the series ended Brown Bearwick returned once again. Personally, he is my favorite Captain Teddy, though he is not the one I got to meet at the convention.
The small movies are all available on DVD or VHS. Some of the old ones have been re-released, including the Tiime Traveler series, but not all of them. There are numerous collections released by teddy movie Studios but what I am waiting for is the ultimate collection that has all the movies - that would be so awesome!
Several of the movies have their soundtracks released on cassette tape or CD. Some of the CDs feature songs by very popular bands, such as Flurff N Fold, UptownDowntime, Pigs on Parade and Hoogers, just to name a few.
